The Art Of SEO

I finally found an SEO book that I like.

Although I do the majority of my research on topics online I do still like to read real hard copy books, I know hard to believe, I know how to read.

One thing I believe most people get themselves in trouble doing is thinking they know everything about a subject, that is usually the first step to failure. Even though I have had some luck and success with various SEO methods I know there is still much to learn, and I would expect a lot of so called experts would say the same, search optimization methods are always changing so keeping up to date is something anyone involved with site development should always be doing. Most do not though….

All that said, most books on search engine optimization that I have read or browsed through were a re-hash of tips you could find online in a quick search or something that worked in 2002 but really is not relevant now. Or the book focused so much on the technical aspects that you could not read past the first 10 pages without falling asleep.

Well, while at the Affiliate Convention a member of an SEO panel (cannot remember if he was a white, grey or blackhat SEO) said the one book on SEO that was of value was The Art Of SEO.

I decided to give it a read and see if he was telling the truth (he was not one of the authors, although another panel member was referenced in the book a few times).

I can say that this book is different, truly the first book on this very complex subject that I can say I truly enjoy. Within the first 2 chapters I had already sent an email to my team members recommending this book. There are not many books I recommend  but as of late there have been three (on 3 different topics):

The Art of SEO (Theory in Practice)

Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School

Viral Loop: From Facebook to Twitter, How Today’s Smartest Businesses Grow Themselves

(Yes those are affiliate links but I have bought and read everyone and recommend them).

The book does a great job going over market statistics, even if you are a pure techie you should pay attention to the marketing statistics to make sure you focus your  search marketing in the right direction.

If you have not read this book yet or have been frustrated by other SEO books, give this one a try. It is different, and the way it is written pulls it all together much better than any I have found.

  1. I’m certainly going to check out the book. The one thing you have to be careful of is the “John Chow” effect. When you become known as an affiliate guy nobody believes you anymore. They think you are saying it to sell it. Regardless of whether its true or not, it’s how people think. I believe your post but I have to admit as soon as you started recommending a book, before I even read further I thought, guaranteed affiliate link coming and sure enough. It’s tough, luckily, you have a good rep. Either way, I going to try it.

  2. Shane,

You are correct. That is a problem. For a long time I never put affiliate links in and then when I did people complain. The funny thing is the same people that complain many times are the same people I guarantee are trying to sell products elsewhere on their sites and I would bet 99 percent of the time have never even used the product they are pimping on their site.

I do have a rule though, I do not put any affiliate links in my blog that I have not actually used. At one point I actually went back to old posts and took out affiliate links on some items that I had never used.

Thanks for supporting me on it though, it is appreciated. We domainers are a strange bunch, we all like to talk about making money but do not like it when someone actually does so honestly:)

    Have a great day!!!

Maybe I should take a picture of the 3 books on my desk and the Art of SEO one having a ton of pages marked that I am referring to:)

  3. Thanks for the info.. will definitely give it a read. Agree, SEO changes so quickly that some techniques become out dated. Looking back at 2009 a lot has changed in this field in a short period of time.

  4. Thanks for the suggestion Bruce.

I might give this a go and have looked at the link as I am having some challenges with a geo domain I am developing. The competition is tough especially when it has “unlimited” resources to maintain their websites.

  5. Shane, Your comment led to a blog post:) You got a link, can you pay me affiliate revenues on it, LOL

All, I hope you all enjoy the book , no joke the best SEO read I have seen.

Bruce thanks in your suggestions and seo books. I will have to read up on it and hope the reading is enjoyable and not as complex so everyone can read it without needing a drink after couple pages.

This industry is more and more complex and its becoming a joke. Look at the forums. People hit you hard for bad names, people hit you hard if you sold a name, people question a sale, people question an nda and the list goes on and on. A lot of jealous people out there and can’t win.

A blog post was taken down because he shown an example of failing on a deal. Was one of the best reads in 2009 and I belive failing can lead to a lot of success. I’m the first one to admit on failing and guess what I’m still failing.

I don’t mind one bit about your Affilate links. In fact when you launched your beta site, I said ok at least I can help you out and signed up through your host gator link.

The point I’m getting across is you can’t win to many egos and know it all people.

Enjoy your blog Bruce and I your well respected among all of us. I don’t mind one bit purchasing an item if you love it and suggest it if I can learn from it. Its a win win for everyone.

In 2010 my 2 goals is learn wordpress and secondly Affilate marketing.

    Regards

The quiet one and name withheld. A proud person that continues to make mistakes everyday and I’m only human.

  7. My SEO friend has recommended this book as well. And being a newbie-wannabe online, i had just placed an order for this from Amazon for $34. I just cant wait for it to arrive.

  8. I believe this book is a good start-up for newbies like me.
