As I sit here everyday and listen to my wife and daughter talkĀ  about Twilight New Moon and about Edward and Bella and how they cannot wait until the release of Twilight New Moon (if you have not heard of The Twilight book series and New Moon turn on the TV or talk to a girl above the age of 2)

Twilight New Moon

Twilight New Moon

I realized that last time I sat with them as they stared intently at the New Moon movie trailer the thing I noticed was that the movie website was not New Moon or Twilight New Moon.

I thought it would be interesting to check out traffic growth for NewMoon.com, a quick check of Alexa showed a rapidly increasing trend of traffic to the site, and what is the site? An online community focused on girls sharing artwork and other creative items (poetry, etc). I am not sure when the community launched but if it was after the initial Twilight release it was a VERY smart move to use this domain name to create a site focused on young girls since that is the primary type-in traffic the name would be receiving.

To give you an idea of traffic growth to the site, NewMoon.com had a 3 month average of 190K but yesterday the average was 63K. That tells you that people are typing in NewMoon.com looking for the movie website, the other thing is if you Google New Moon you will see NewMoon.com on the first page of Google for the term, and I can only imagine how many millions of girls and women are searching for the term this week.

The next thing I check was to see what was on TwilightNewMoon.com, as suspected it was nothing to do with the movie, someone setup a guestbook site saying that "We will let you know when we are up and running" and has Twilight New Moon Fansite in the title. I would expect they are trying to get around trademark issues by saying that.

Well, a quick check of Alexa ranking on TwilightNewMoon.com shows me that the 3 month change in ranking has dropped by 1.3 million and has a 7 day average of 402K, I would expect that to drop rapidly as we get closer to the end of this next week.

Anyway, no real earth shattering info here but thought it was interesting to check what sat on the top two domains for what will be one of the biggest grossing movies of the year. Some of the website names for movies these days have been horrible. Twilight doesn't have a bad name but with an actual business being built on NewMoon.com that does not infringe on the movie but focuses on that target audience it could be a nice boon for them in growth.
