It Takes More Than A Domain Name And A Script
After reading a very interesting post today about a transaction gone bad and someone telling the person to rebuild I moved on to the comments after the post since I knew they would be interesting..
The second person who commented (Bill) called the writer of the post such things as "rookie" and "stupid" because he had no intention of rebuilding the site. First off, anyone who knows thw writer knows that he is anything but stupid. You do not have portfolio that he has by being stupid and by acting like rookie.
But this post is not really to defend his honor, he did that just fine in his reply.
What really makes me laugh about the comment is that "Bill" acts like it just takes a domain name and a quick blog script to build up a highly successful, high traffic site. He insinuates that if you just throw the script up the traffic just comes back and no more work is needed, POOF!!! Instant Alexa 5000.
No "Bill", it takes more than a script or anyone with Wordpress would have sites that get hundreds of thousands of visitors a day. Building a successful site requires first and foremost a PLAN, within that plan there will be marketing costs, sales, etc, etc. The problem with many people focused purely on the technical side of things is that they miss the point that it takes more than just a script and a rudimentary understanding of Linux to build a business.
There is also something else that is needed, and this is one that is missed on most, it is the interest in building the specific BUSINESS. It is not just a site, it is a BUSINESS. In the writers case he is not interested in rebuilding that business, so to call him stupid and rookie for not wanting to rebuild something is uncalled for.
So, to say it one more time, it takes more than a domain and a script to build a business.
NOTE: The post has been updated and comments closed based on the fact some were getting way too personal about someone other than myself on here. If the comments were pointed at me I would be happy to leave them, but since they are at other people I chose to close them because, well, I can. I always let all comments pass through but in cases where it is personal against someone else it is probably unfair to that person to leave them since that person may not be seeing them since they are on this blog.
