SEO From a Mall Kiosk???

Recently I was at the West County Mall in St. Louis and ran into something that could only be described as amusing.

Local Search Engine Optimization

Local Search Engine Optimization

After leaving the Apple store I noticed a kiosk with a screen rotating the services the company offered, typically I do not pay much attention to these things but in this case as the screen switched from home computer setup, wireless networking, and other mundane services to something a bit more complex and something that was quite funny.

The company was asking if I wanted to be found on the first page of Google. Did you know you could buy local search engine optimization in a mall???

Since I like to instigate a bit I thought it would be fun to quiz the person in the booth about getting my business found on the first page of Google. My wife thought it best to walk away before it started for some reason...

Local SEO at the Mall

Local SEO at the Mall

After the person first did not even know about the sign that had just flashed that the company he was promoting offered such services and local SEO he then tried to sell me on coming to my house to setup my internet (I would of paid a million to hear him say interwebs). I then asked again as the slide flashed again, even after I had already explained my company did online advertising, web development, and we helped businesses get found online he asked if I needed a website.

I was done having fun at this point but he did then continue to tell me that "Josh" was good at this that or the other, literally everything on the board from anti-virus to local search was his "specialty".

So, next time you are in the mall beware of search engine optimization from a kiosk, but then again, maybe you can have your spyware removed at the same time.

That is lovely! You would be surprised how little people actually know about the internet and believe using buzz words or filling people with tech talk is going to cut it. There is a giant disconnect when it comes to this (it’s the same as if we were trying to explain domain investing) but in order for people to understand we need to talk in their language. Your experience is a great example of the uneducated teaching the uneducated. Can we really blame them if we (the people who know better) don’t open our mouths?

Sooooo correct Tia. It is funny, our team says it everyday. We spend our time educating more than selling.

You would be amazed how much customers actually appreciate education.

I have preached this to the Localtek team and any other company in this type of business needs to be doing the same. I feel bad for the customers that end up working with companies like the one above….

I’m in the digital marketing biz and while looking over resumes to fill empty positions I am stunned how so many young professionals coming out of college or even a few years out of college have no or very limited digital marketing or e-commerce experience. It’s like they’ve grown up USING the Internet but have never been curious about or obtained any experience putting the Internet to use for marketing and making money. Many have never built a web page! I’ve been in digital since 1997 and I guess I just expect that younger folks would have caught up to my digital knowledge by now just because they are younger and growing up with the Internet as an engrained part of their lives. Guess I’m wrong.

I am amazed everyday how many people use the internet everyday to find things to buy, look for businesses, etc, etc but never think that they can benefit from taking advantage of that.

    BTW Logan, I clicked:)

Computer installation, virus removal, website design and SEO all from one convenient local mall location. If they were sell Icees, nachos and wrinkle cream they would be diversified.

Nachos and SEO, hmmm new business model. But you are correct the diversification in this economy is a good idea :)
