I could not agree more with this post. At the end of the day, even though I have not been out of work that long, I see a potential tough road ahead. The good news is, I am somewhat a kept man, the wife earns well. But the gator is big as well, it needs lots of feeding. Enter the concept above, as well, the idea of "piecing together" the living. For two years now I have run a part time business as a Texas Process Server. Easy entry, one half day of classes, a certificate, a background check, and away you go. Now my best client is my wife, this still can bring several hundred dollars a week. The website www.tracylegalservices.com is under development now....thanks Bruce for all of this knowledge on webbing. I am learning.

But we are also starting a consulting practice that will focus on cost reductions and going green. Offered will be fee based consultation on communications, IT arenas, and telecom and utilitiy audits. Its a slow start, word of mouth is how this gets going...but this embraces exactly what the blog post above suggests, get something in house that is your own, build it up in these unemployed times, piece together business opportunities to get incremental dollars in, and who knows, with a few right moves, hard work, you may just end up saying goodbye to those idiots that let you go in the first place, forever!

Check out our website www.penlandcorner.com. Anyone needs this type of services, our contact info is on there, and we are good at what we do!

Thanks for listening......

Bruce:

I started a business in October of last year. I felt scared because of the serious recession; however, I didn't stop.

Today, I have people coming to my shop in downtown Bonne Terre that never came to my father-in-law's business.

It takes guts - some resources, but hard work is also the key. Don't stop trying. Push forward and things will come around. You got to want to be successful and you have to believe in yourself.

I also found that when you give back to your community - rewards continue to come your way.

@Brian
That is great news for your wife. I really truly hate to see good people going through the stuff they are going through. Its good to see a good story for once, glad to hear bud!

@Leonard
You got it, its never a guarantee but when things are like they are it seems that at some point it makes sense to spend a portion of your time building something for yourself rather than waiting for something to happen.

Thanks for the comments both of you, appreciated.

Yes, finding a job even when the economy is healthy takes time. We are in the midst of a severe recession unlike any most of us have seen in our adult lifetimes. The number of retail stores and restaurants in nearby shopping centers which have closed is astounding (three nearby shopping centers have a 30%+ vacancy rate, another is "only 16%"). A startup company is no guarantee of an immediate income stream. But you if you don't give it a try, you'll never know...Be flexible and ready to change course as necessary.

Bruce:
Nice post, I know a lot of ideas in this world were born after someone got laid off. I guess my wife got lucky. She got laid off from her company on June 30, but they called her back so now she goes back on August 10.
